Interactive Unit Review: AP Physics 1 Unit 2

Force and Translational Dynamics

This review covers AP Physics 1 Unit 2 in one connected problem. A 40 kg cargo pod travels from a loading ramp, through a counterweight hoist, around a test loop and a flat curve, and into orbit.

13 questions in 5 stages · progress saves in this browser

Start the review
The flat curve stage: a ghost transporter moving too fast slides off the curve while the real transporter rounds it.
Flat curve · at too high a speed, the ghost slides off the road

How it works

Answer first, then watch your answer run.

At each stage you draw a free-body diagram, apply Newton’s second law, or analyze circular motion and gravitation. When you answer, the stage runs, and a cyan ghost moves according to your answer beside the ideal solution. A correct answer keeps the ghost with the real pod. A wrong answer makes it separate, so you can see what your answer would do.

  1. Answer the question. Each question asks for a number, a choice, or a free-body diagram. Hints and worked values are available when a step blocks you.
  2. Watch the stage run. The solid objects move according to the ideal solution, and the cyan ghost moves according to your answer.
  3. Read the feedback. Each common mistake gets its own explanation, and the final card lists the topics you missed on the first try.

What this review covers

5 stages from force and translational dynamics.

Stage 1

Loading ramp

  • Free-body diagram on an incline
  • Newton’s second law with friction on an incline

Stage 2

Counterweight hoist

  • Connected objects over a pulley
  • Tension in a rope joining two accelerating masses

Stage 3

Test loop

  • Free-body diagram at the top of a vertical loop
  • Vertical circle: normal force at the top
  • Newton’s third law
  • Minimum speed at the top of a vertical loop

Stage 4

Flat curve

  • Direction of the net force in circular motion
  • Static friction as the centripetal force

Stage 5

Orbit

  • Inverse-square gravity
  • Gravity as the centripetal force
  • Period of a circular orbit

Inside the review

A wrong answer shows what it would do.

The test loop stage: a ghost pod driven by a normal force that is too large leaves the track at the top of the loop.
Test loop · a normal force that is too large bends the ghost’s path inside the loop
The orbit stage: a ghost satellite launched with the wrong speed leaves the circular orbit.
Orbit · the wrong orbital speed sends the ghost off the circle
